Just assume you are looking for a substitute for your mother’s lap. Assume you want to withdraw to a place removed from the horrors of the world. The best option: a treehouse. Because while it will immediately remind you of that childlike-heroic feeling of the first or perhaps only time you had a home of your own, treetops and lush greenery also have a comforting effect.

Traveling appeases the desire to flee too. And South Africa’s countryside touches troubled big city hearts in such a way that the view from the ground already has a calming effect. And all this—South African treehouses with a view—can be reserved at the Tsala Treetop Lodge amid breathtaking scenery between the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The ten suites linked with wooden bridges were architectonically integrated into the forest in such a way that not a single tree had to be chopped down on the 80-hectare property. The thoughtful way the lodge has been integrated is also complemented by the colors and materials of the furnishings that are handmade of natural stone, wood and glass. Each suite has also been equipped with its own pool and sundeck.

The main house has a library, bar and restaurant, combining local, traditional cooking with European influences. Its inlayed glass floor is just another example for the organic design approach. In the Khoi Khoi language, Tsitsikamma means “clear, bubbling water.” The wild mountain and coastal landscape of the Garden Route between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay that is 10 km away not only has abundant vegetation and idyllic lagunas but the largest rainforest on an otherwise sparsely wooded cape. And so one lies in mother nature’s lap where one can find peace from the world.
