2008 the gallery “hatch” has opened its doors to sticker lovers worldwide in Berlin Friedrichshain. Stickers from all different scenes, collected for more than over 20 years promise to make the heart of the sticker collector beat faster. Inspired by his own passion, Oliver Baudach not just decided to open his fund to the public but also create an interface between brand stickers one generally can only get in stores, and collectors. The scene doesn’t seem to be so big, or one at least gets the impression because it’s not connected. Of course, there is some literature out there concerning the sticker culture, exhibitions and the “Online Sticker Award”.

Hatch is now adding the first online-mailorder for free stickers worldwide. For little money you can get your favourite stickers in packages of 6, 12 or 18 pieces, do research and posting on some you have seen, check new entries and exchange information with other collectors on the website. Nada Carls, who works together with Oliver, explains: ”The main motivation for the concept was that we really wished that this had existed when we started to collect. All the years we have been to stores and tradeshows like the ‘bright fair’, asking for stickers over and over again. But the thing is you can never choose what you get and especially for kids who don’t live in the big cities it’s hard to get them. We want to become the first address for people who share the love for that culture with us.” But where does this fascination for the sticker culture come from? “For me it’s the colourful diversity. It’s so cool, you know, with little financial use you can make real great stuff and especially skateboard companies did and still do,” Oliver says. It’s the same for Nada, who is adding the aspect of identification with brands and what it means to kids to put them on their skateboards or school-books. Which leads to the question of sticking down. “Cool, but tricky. I’ve stuck them down many times and was later annoyed about it by myself”, Nada laughs.

Hatch has a special distribution policy. Every sticker costs the same and you can only buy 3 pieces from every design. With this policy they try to avoid that someone acquires too many pieces of one design and maybe sells them for more money on e-bay. It also guarantees a broad distribution to the companies that offer their stickers through hatch. “We want everybody to have the same chance to get a sticker,“ they say. Further events, exhibitions with other collectors and different street-artists and a magazine are planned in the near future. We dig it.
