M.I.A. |  „MAYA“


Hier ist sie nun endlich: die Platte zum Videoskandal, zum New York Times Interview-Skandal, zum Dauerskandal, den die Person M.I.A. verkörpert. Was davon bis jetzt zu hören war, ist auf der einen Seite ‚Born Free’, Suicide-Hommage und folglich brachialer Industrial mit ebenso brachialem Video. Auf der anderen Seite die erste Single ‚xxxo’, die durch austauschbare Popseichtigkeit besticht bzw. eben nicht besticht.
Da zeigt sich eigentlich schon, was von der LP zu erwarten ist, nämlich, dass M.I.A. ihrem Stilprinzip treu bleibt, keinem Stil treu zu bleiben. Im Gegensatz zur alles beherrschenden Aufgeregtheit des Vorgängeralbums finden sich auf ‚MAYA’ sogar ein paar Balladen, in denen sie tatsächlich, wenn auch zögerlich, ein wenig singt. Die entspannte Reggae-Nummer ‚It takes a muscle’ oder das hymnische ‚Tell me why’, in dem ein ganzer Chor gesampled wird, eignen sich hervorragend als Begleitung zum sommerlichen Relaxen – wenn man sich nicht an der Vocodermanie des Produzenten Diplo stört. Diese neue Entwicklung in Richtung Downtempo kommt ganz gut, besonders als Ausgleich zu einem Stück wie ‚Meds and Feds’, bei dem die Schmerzgrenze der Sensiblen deutlich überschritten wird mit einer irren Kopplung von Schweinerock-Gitarre und Stampftechno-Beat. Es ist anzunehmen, dass Diplo hier die Parallelen zu den EBM-Derwischen Skinny Puppy auszumachen geglaubt hat, die er auf seiner Twitterseite laut werden ließ. Und jetzt wischen wir uns alle den Schweiß von der Stirn und stellen erleichtert fest, dass M.I.A. nicht nur Skandale sondern auch und immer noch überraschende Platten basteln kann.
