Die Godfathers (und –mothers) des Alternative Rock laden heute Abend in die Columbiahalle: Gestimmte Gitarren? Egal! Seit ihrer Gründung in den Achtzigern liegt die Priorität von Sonic Youth auf improvisierter Entstehung ihres avantgardistischen No-Wave- und Noise-Rock-Sound. Mit ihrem aktuellen Album „The Eternal“ gehen sie zurück zu ihren experimentierfreudigen Wurzeln.

Goodbye 20th Century – Sonic Youth

Gleich im Intro von „Goodbye 20th Century“ sprich Autor David Browne eine Warnung an alle Leser aus: „Es wird keine Sex, Drugs und Rock’n’Roll-Geschichten geben.“ Und trotzdem, die Bandgeschichte von Sonic Youth ist lang, wild und Punk. Was einst in den 1980er Jahren in New York als Ära experimenteller Rebellion, Improvisationsmusik und Avantgarderock begann, ist ohne diesen Bandnamen nicht zu erklären. Bis heute vermischen sich die Ausdrucksformen der mittlerweile alle jenseits der 50 angelangten Mitglieder, Sonic Youth ist eine davon: „Wir sind Künstler, die einen Großteil ihrer Kunst in Form von Musik machen.“, so Kim Gordon und Thurston Moore. Sonic Youth | The Eternal

Es ist ungefähr das 598. Album von Sonic Youth – na ja gefühlt zumindest. Die Bandgeschichte ist lang und wild, was einst vor fast 30 Jahren in New York als Ära experimenteller Rebellion, Improvisationsmusik und Avantgarderock begann, ist ohne diesen Bandnamen nicht zu erklären. Bis heute vermischen sich die Ausdrucksformen der mittlerweile alle jenseits der 50 angelangten Mitglieder, Sonic Youth ist eine davon: „Wir sind Künstler, die einen Großteil ihrer Kunst in Form von Musik machen.“ So besteht bei ihnen keine Veranlassung, eine neue Veröffentlichung mit Geltungssucht oder Geldmangel zu assoziierten, es gibt auch dieses Mal keine „Very very Best of Greatest Hits“, sondern einen neuen spannungsgeladenen Output mit wieder mehr Krach und Experiment drin: „The Eternal“. For the past 27 years, this famous postpunk band was also a crystallization point for a network that goes from cool to artsy, from avant-garde to sectarianism, and is ambitious and multidisciplinary across all the arts. To shed light on the furthest reaches of this cosmos, an exhibition is currently touring through Europe: “Sonic Youth etc. – Sensational Fix.” We asked the curators and artists involved in the project for their own personal feedback.
